CBD oils compared: spectrum, concentration and carrier oil explained

CBD oils are hemp extracts diluted in a carrier oil and sold in bottles with a dropper. They are the most widely sold CBD format in Europe, which also means a very wide range of strengths, extraction methods and prices.

This page ranks listings with a general score that combines the lab analysis certificate, THC compliance, price per unit, origin and batch transparency, so you can compare bottles on real figures instead of slogans.

What is a CBD oil?

A full spectrum extract keeps a range of hemp compounds, a broad spectrum extract has had most THC removed, and an isolate-based oil contains purified cannabidiol only. The carrier is often MCT oil or hemp seed oil, and it changes taste and texture. Taste and texture are also part of the choice: MCT oil is neutral and fluid, hemp seed oil is more earthy, and flavoured versions exist. A dark glass bottle protects the extract from light, and a dropper makes the product easier to handle. Because strengths differ so much, the price per milligram of CBD is the most reliable way to compare bottles.

How to choose a CBD oil

  • Spectrum: full spectrum, broad spectrum or isolate.
  • Concentration: the percentage on the label should match the milligrams per millilitre.
  • Carrier oil: MCT, hemp seed or olive oil, depending on taste and tolerance.
  • Bottle size: compare the price per milligram of CBD, not per bottle.

What to check on the label and the lab report

The total CBD in the bottle, the volume and the milligrams per millilitre should be stated. A certificate of analysis for the batch should show CBD content and THC below your country's legal limit, ideally with contaminants tested. Also note the origin of the hemp and the extraction method.

Food and supplement rules

Oils for ingestion fall under food or supplement rules, and the novel food status of CBD extracts varies by country. The product must be labelled for its stated use. Check the situation where you live before buying.

Legal reminder

THC limits and rules on CBD extracts differ from one country to another and change over time. In much of the EU the limit for hemp is 0.2 % or 0.3 % THC, but national rules vary, so check the regulations where you live. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between full spectrum and isolate oil?

Full spectrum keeps several hemp compounds along with CBD, while isolate contains purified CBD only. Broad spectrum sits between them. The lab report shows which compounds are really present.

How do I calculate the price per mg of CBD?

Divide the price of the bottle by the total milligrams of CBD it contains. A 10 ml bottle of 5 % oil holds about 500 mg of CBD, which lets you compare bottles of different sizes.

Are CBD oils allowed as food?

The status depends on the country, and CBD extracts are subject to novel food rules in the EU. Check national regulations, and choose products labelled for the intended use.
