Choosing the right temperature to vaporize CBD
A vaporizer heats flowers without burning them. Cannabinoids and terpenes turn into vapour at different temperatures, so setting the temperature means choosing what you inhale. The values above are approximate boiling points published by BC Cannabis Stores. In practice, release starts a little earlier.
Three ranges to remember
160 to 180 °C: light, very aromatic vapour. Volatile terpenes (pinene, myrcene, limonene) and some of the CBD are released. Ideal for flavour and for beginners. 180 to 200 °C: the most popular range for CBD. The vapour is denser and extraction more complete. Linalool, the floral terpene of lavender, joins in at around 198 °C. 200 to 220 °C: maximum extraction, thick vapour and a toastier taste. CBC is released at around 220 °C.
Above 220 °C
From about 230 °C, plant material starts to burn. This creates smoke with tar and irritants, exactly what a vaporizer is meant to avoid. That is why most devices top out at 220 or 230 °C.
Practical tips
Grind the flowers finely but not to powder, don't pack the chamber too tightly, and start low before going up in steps of 5 to 10 °C. The colour of the spent material is a good guide: light brown means full extraction, black means it was too hot. Our full vaporizer guide covers choosing and cleaning a device.

Frequently asked questions
Short, clear answers with no health claims.
What is the best temperature to vaporize CBD?
Most people choose 180 to 200 °C. Below that the vapour is more aromatic but lighter; above it, denser but less flavourful.
At what temperature does CBD vaporize?
CBD's boiling point is given as 160 to 180 °C. Release starts slightly earlier and stays effective up to about 200 °C.
At what temperature does the flower burn?
Combustion starts at about 230 °C. Above that you are no longer vaporizing but smoking.
