The question "is CBD a drug?" comes up again and again in searches, so the Big CBD Product team is opening it for discussion.
It depends on what is meant by "drug". On the legal side, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled on 19 November 2020 (the Kanavape case, C-663/18) that CBD is not a narcotic drug within the meaning of the 1961 UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.
On the scientific side, the World Health Organization's Expert Committee on Drug Dependence reviewed CBD in 2017-2018 and found no evidence of abuse or dependence potential for pure CBD.
In the medical sense, CBD products sold in shops are not medicines. There is one CBD-based prescription medicine, used for certain rare forms of epilepsy, and it is prescribed and supervised by doctors. For any health question, ask a doctor or pharmacist.
Did you assume CBD was classed as a drug before reading about it? Where did that idea come from?
